The site preparations for me is getting all the information in, such as drainage runs, footings areas, access to site in terms of diggers, supplier deliveries and storage. In addition it is vital at all times to maintain Health and Safety, therefore ground clearance for the duration of the build must be maintained in a clean and methodical manner, so as to avoid the inevitable accidents that can take place with a poorly managed site.

The way I work is to dig out the footings, pour the concrete, then build the structure minus openings for windows and doorways, then fit the roofing. Finally once the flooring is completed, position the steel beams in place and then do the knock through into the existing house as a last minute job to avoid the disruption and dust to the property owners.

There are different ways of doing extensions in terms of what and when, but I believe taking all the factors into account and these different methodologies, there is only one way for each job you do. Experience teaches you the best most cost effective and practical ways to achieve your goal.
